Q&A Case Study Interview with Jayson Jackson, Clin-Path Associates

How long ago did you first hear of Persystent?
“I did an internet search in Sept of 08.”

What keywords did you use to find Persystent?
“I think the only keywords I used were “disk imaging” and Persystent popped up.”

Was there a compelling event that drove you to search for a product like Persystent?
“What drove us was really the need to rebuild 90% of our computers. In the past we used Ghost but it didn’t serve our needs, then we came across Persystent.”

How many people are in your IT department?
“There is 1 person in our IT department (Jayson). The PCs under management are about 75 total. Our offices are spread out in multiple locations but only a 15 minute drive at most. The PCs include the pathologist’s dictation machines, used mainly by doctors for diagnosis. They don’t need to be on 24/7. All of our PCs are HP machines loaded with Microsoft Office 07.”

How are you using Persystent in your environment?
“I think we may be unique from most customers in that the functionality we are using is disk imaging only. It’s great for rolling out new machines. At first it was 20 machines (which is why we looked into Persystent in the first place) at one time but now we are down to 2 per week. Persystent cut down the provisioning time from a whole day to just about 1 hour and a half. I basically strip out the machine, then load the corporate configuration. The core software applications include Microsoft Office 7, a 3rd party tool for our doctors and a bunch of little applications.”

Could you describe the highlights of your implementation of Persystent into your environment?
“It was basically 1 – 2 hours of online coaching – installing the key and demo. It was pretty simple. The Systems Engineer that helped with the remote implementation knew that we use Persystent for provisioning.”

Could you describe a day in your life as an IT Administrator?
“Well, every day is different and because we are small we all wear several hats. I usually get in around 5 am every day. The mornings are beautiful in Arizona. This time of year (April) it’s about mid 50s in the morning and in the afternoon it’s in the 80s. For the 1st part of the morning I usually do paperwork before the doctors come in. Then, about 40% of my day is spent managing a major construction project! Our business tripled in size and since I used to travel the world building call centers, so it made sense for me to be put in charge of the building project. I manage all the contractors myself including the general contractor, electricians, plumbers, HVAC and dry wall companies as well as the IT infrastructure.”

Tell us more about your background.
“My background is building directory assistance call centers in Canada and the Philippines. During this process I managed the techs as well as the contractors. In my current role, we are on target for the completion date at the end of May. We are expanding our business, taking over 2 more suites as well as going through and  renovating the current section that we occupy. We support 30 pathologists. I don’t have a title – actually none of us have titles here, and no healthcare background, but I’m the person they know to call for either a computer or construction issue. Thanks to Persystent I’m not at all feeling the pressure of expansion.”

What do you like best about your work?
“Without question, the environment here is so unique. We don’t see patients, rather, we do diagnosis of problems and determine if something is wrong w/skin cells for example. We specialize in biopsies and I get to watch the entire process from when the case enters the door to when it leaves. We are affiliated with hospitals throughout Arizona.”

What do you like most about Persystent Suite?
“I really like Persystent Suite. I only use it for imaging because that’s our need here and I love it. It’s a great product.”
