Preparing for Windows 7 Migration

Consider these elements when your IT department is ready to migrate XP to Windows 7 or Vista Business to Windows 7.

Be aware of the following Windows 7 requirements:

  • 1 GHz processor (32- or 64-bit)
  • 1 GB of RAM (32-bit); 2 GB of RAM (64-bit)
  • 16 GB of available disk space (32-bit); 20 GB of available disk space (64-bit)
  • DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Understand your PC landscape. The built-in asset management reports in Persystent Suite can easily help with this step and give IT critical information concerning which existing PCs are ready for a Windows 7 OS migration and how many PCs need to be replaced with new machines.

Check for application compatibility issues. Do all applications gel with Windows 7? Has the Microsoft built-in toolkit identified any issues? Have the vendors been contacted to ensure they support the new OS?  IT can leverage the free toolkit offered by Microsoft, but it’s best to call the vendors directly to ensure optimal success.

Automate the provisioning of new machines. The multi-casting capabilities of Persystent Suite enable organizations to image multiple machines simultaneously. Once the new O/S is installed, the previously captured user profiles can be automatically restored to the new Windows 7 machines.

Preserve end-user profiles and settings. Since the upgrade option is not available in Windows 7 Setup when installing Windows 7 on a computer running Windows XP, Persystent accelerates the process of re-provisioning by suggesting that the computer’s operating system be removed by formatting the hard drive. After Windows 7 is then installed, Persystent Suite restores the end-user profiles which would otherwise be lost.

Minimize end user downtime. With Persystent, IT can automate the migration of thousands of computers (both new hardware preloaded with Windows 7 and existing machines to be updated) by scheduling tasks from a convenient web-based IT management console, at a preferred “off hours” time and date -- making for an easy transition.

Ensure work-ready PCs, post-migration. Once deployed, Persystent Suite can ensure continued compliance by making those applications part of an organization’s desired Windows 7 repair point. Persystent Software offers built-in capabilities to enable the success rate of future software patching and updates.

In light of our ability to streamline the process of Windows 7 OS migration, Persystent Software has received attention by media outlets such as Network World, the premiere publication for network and IT administrators, who recognized Persystent as a market leader for Windows 7 OS migration.
